On June 21, at 12:46:09 pm Pacific Daylight Time, the Cosmos 1 spacecraft will be launched atop a converted ICBM from a submerged Russian submarine in the Barents Sea.
Cosmos 1, designed and funded by the Planetary Society, is the first craft that has ever been built and sent to space by a non-government space interest group.
A more significant achievement, if it works, is that the Cosmos 1 spacecraft will be powered only by light reflected off a bank of 49-foot sails, much as a sailing ship uses huge sails to harness the power of the wind.
"Theory suggests that an infinite stream of photons, striking the reflective surfaces of the craft's windmill-like blades, will propel it forward in space.
"Though the photons have no mass, each carries a tiny amount of energy that it transfers to the spacecraft when it strikes the sails."
Cosmos 1, big enough to be seen from the Earth's surface, will be one of the largest objects ever launched into space.
The eight large blades, which will act as sails, are made of .0002-inch thick Mylar.
Because the Cosmos 1 spacecraft does not carry its own power, it is much easier to launch into space. The drawback is that reaching high speeds using the photon energy can take years. Once achieved, though, those speeds can exceed 100,000 MPH, six times as fast as the space shuttle.
The experimental mission is scheduled to last for 30 days.
